41st FORUM ON THE GEOLOGY OF INDUSTRIAL MINERALS

Organized by: Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Mines Department of
Ore Deposits & Geochemistry
PURPOSE: The Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals is an annual meeting, commonly sponsored by state or provincial survey and universities, that presents excellent talks, posters and field trips. It brings together geologists and mining engineers from industry, government and universities to discuss the geology, production, uses, economics and marketing of industrial minerals. The 41st Forum will cover Turkey, USA, Europe, North America and other International topics. All talks, posters and trips will be in English.
THEME SESSIONS : Technical program focuses on Strategic Minerals, Clays, Rare Earths, Zeolite, Perlite, Gypsum, Limestone, Silica Sand, Barite, Diatomite, Feldspar, Aggregate and Cement, Brines and Evaporites, Gemstones, Marble and Dimension Stones, Marketing and Transportation.
LOCATION: The Forum will be held in Istanbul-Turkey, at the Suleyman Demirel Culture Center ( SDCC) on the Ayazaga Campus of Istanbul Technical University. SDCC has meetings rooms, a restaurant and free parking.

REGISTRATION DESK: Registration will be in the main lobby of the SDCC on Sunday May 22, from 4.00 until 8.00 pm. Monday and Tuesday, May 23 and 24, from 7:00 a.m untill 5:00 p.m.; Wednesday, May 25, from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Participant should pick up badges, tickets and other materials at the registration desk soon after arrival. Admission to reception, meals, technical sessions and other activities will be by badge or ticket only.
RECEPTION: reception for registrants from 6:00 – 9:00 pm on Sunday, May 22, in Conference main lobby ( SDCC) , where posters are being set up.
BANQUET: Banquet and entertainment will be in the Istanbul the best hotel of Istanbul (Movenpick 5* hotel). The Hotel is just near the SDCC. We hope that you will enjoy delicious and traditional meal and drink of Turkey.
TRANSPORTATION: International Ataturk Airport is approximately 20 miles west of SDCC. Taxi services (for one to four person) are available at the airport. We suggest airport taxi service to the participants. Rental cars are also available at the airport. WEATHER: May is the best beautiful time of Istanbul. The daytime high should be 70-85F(21-30C) and nighttime should be 55-70F(13-21C).

First Day ISTANBUL – KAYSERI - CAPPODOCIA
Departure from Istanbul to Kayseri with an early flight. Depart to Cappodocia. Fullday tour of Cappadocia begins with citadel of Uchisar which will enable you to get a panoramic view of the region and continues with the Goreme valley which is the highlight of the day. The valley houses , the Goreme open air museum with its churches hewn out of rock and colorful frescoes which decorate them. The next stop is in Zelve and the caves of this ancient village, the underground city of Derinkuyu which was carves as refuges from persecutors during the early Christian era. Lunch will be served enroute at a typical regional restaurant dinner & overnight in Cappadocia.
Second day CAPPADOCIA – KONYA – AFYON Departure to Konya will be early in the morning. Enroute there will be a stop visit to magnesite field. The next stop will be in Konya which was the capital of the Seljuk Turks in 13 th century. This city hosts the Mevlana museum which is also known for its theological school of whirling dervish. Lunch will be served enroute. Dinner and overnight will be at the hotel in Afyon.
Third day AFYON – PAMUKKALE After breakfast at the hotel departure to Iscehisar, which is the biggest marble deposits of Turkey. Lunch will be taken enroute at a typical restaurant .last stop will be the great baths of Hierapolis antique city . After this visit dinner & overnight will be at the hotel in Pamukkale.
Fourth day PAMUKKALE - EPHESUS – KUSADASI After breakfast departure to Kusadasi. After a 3 hr way lunch will be served in Selcuk at a typical restaurant. In the afternoon the visit will continue with the house of virgin mary and Ephesus which is the best preserved and the most often visited of all sites in Turkey. Dinner and overnight will be at the hotel in Kusadasi.
Fifth day KUSADASI – BALIKESIR - BURSA - ISTANBUL Departure will be early in the morning to Balikesir. Lunch will be served enroute. After the lunch visit of borate deposits. Arrival to Istanbul will be late. Transfer to the hotel or to the airport.
